Short Biography:

Dr. Feng Lin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Colorado Denver. He currently directs the Mobile And Pervasive Sensing (MAPS) lab. Before that, he was a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Tennessee Technological University. He earned his M.S. degree from Shanghai University and B.S. degree from Zhejiang Univeristy. Dr. Lin was also employed at Alcatel-Lucent (now Nokia) from 2009 to 2010.

His research interests include Mobile and Pervasive Sensing, Smart and Connected Health, Cyber-Physical Security, and Human-Centric Computing

Research 

1. Smart and Mobile Health 

Nursing Room Safety

  • Recognize patient handling activities to prevent injury risk for caregivers.
  • A novel spatio-temporal warping (STW) pattern recognition framework is proposed to fully exploit the spatial and temporal characteristics of plantar pressure.
  • An action manifold learning (AML) framework is proposed to extract the intrinsic signature structure by projecting raw pressure data from a high- dimensional input space to a low-dimensional manifold space.

  • Sleep Posture Recognition

  • Sleep posture is a key component in sleep quality assessment and pressure ulcer prevention.
  • We propose a novel similarity-based approach, Body-Earth Mover's Distance (BEMD), for sleep posture recognition.
  • BEMD treats the pressure images as weighted 2D shapes, and combines EMD and Euclidian distance for similarity measure.

  • Sleep Disorder Detection

  • Sleep monitoring is receiving increasing attention in the healthcare community, because the quality of sleep is an important index of health and wellbeing.
  • We present a contact-less and cost-effective sleep monitoring system, named SleepSense, and evaluate it comprehensively by two sets of experiments.
  • The SleepSense consists of three parts: a Doppler radar-based sensor, a robust automated radar demodulation module, and a sleep status recognition framework.
  • Stroke Rehabilitation

  • Formal rehabilitation is well organized in the acute stages of stroke, there is minimal professional support of rehabilitation across the lifespan.
  • We introduced an upper extremity rehabilitation system, QM-FOrMS, by integrating cost-effective portable sensors and clinically verified motion quality analysis towards individuals with upper limb motor deficits.
  • The system provides a set of unilateral and bilateral functional activities that the patient can select and work on refining their quality of movement.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Screening

  • A diagnosis of ASD is challenging to receive in a timely manner because the current diagnostic practice requires considerable cost and time, and is often subjective.
  • We explored a new ASD screening method, namely Gaze-Wasserstein, that is objective, fast, and widely accessible. Specifically, Gaze-Wasserstein implements the discrete gaze pattern distribution and utilizes 1st Wasserstein distance for dissimilarity measure.
  • We conducted a pilot study with 16 ASD children and 16 typically developing children (32 participants). Evaluation results demonstrate effectiveness and time-efficiency of our proposed method in the ASD screening.

  • 2. Cyber-Physical Security 

    Thermal Handprint Analysis for Forensic Identification

  • We exploit the infrared thermography in extracting handprint for personal identification for following reasons: i) it expands target extent by capturing any object with a temperature above zero; ii) thermal handprint can be obtained regardless of illumination or direct contact, which is more robust than other visible light-based imaging; iii) it is cost-effective compared to the high-resolution camera used in extracting detailed features of fingerprint.
  • We exploit the thermal handprint and introduce a novel distance metric for thermal handprint dissimilarity measure, called Heat-Earth Mover's Distance (HEMD).
  • The HEMD is designed to classify heat-based handprints that can be obtained even when the subject wears a glove.

  • My Smartphone Knows What You Print

  • We exploited the Smartphone-based Side-channel Attacks Against 3D Printers.
  • We investigated the possible acoustic and magnetic side-channel attacks using the smartphone built-in sensors.
  • Experimental results show that by exploiting the side-channel signals collected by smartphones, we can successfully reconstruct the physical prints and their G-code.
